Crochet pattern stitch charts (symbol charts) are being used more frequently as an addition to or in place of patterns with words/abbreviations. This is convenient for use when you find an amazing pattern, but the instructions are written in a language you do not understand. A stitch chart takes away the translation problem. Here I’ve attempted to collect the most commonly used crochet symbols that I’ve found in patterns. However, please note that this is far from a complete list. Many times you will still come across a symbol or abbreviation that you’ve never seen, especially in more complex patterns. I recommend doing a Google search for those. Also included below is a list of the most common abbreviations. Again, not a complete list but one that will be helpful from time to time.
